Applications in Theory and Practice
By Susanne Cook-Greuter, Beena Sharma

Integral Theory Conference

We introduce a focus on ‘polarities’ in understanding developmental movement. Embracing ’both/and thinking’ represents an aspect of transformation from conventional to post-conventional meaning making, an advance towards a more integral awareness. We will suggest stage-specific polarities, and make a distinction between ‘horizontal’ and ‘vertical’ polarities – tensions ‘within’ a particular stage, and those ‘across’ stages. The maturing ego at later stages becomes spontaneously aware of the very nature of polarities as an unavoidable aspect of understanding in the relative realm. The practice of embracing polarities and paradox with equanimity helps to expand consciousness and is one of the portals beyond suffering.
